About this deal

Texture photography overlaps with many kinds of photography, including everything from fine art to classic portraiture. Texture also plays an important role in macro photography. By zooming in on the details of an image with a macro lens, you can experience it in a new way. “Sometimes I photograph lichen and it’s an absolute sea of texture,” says photographer Meg Madden. You can also look for textures at home. Even the most boring-looking room is full of patterns and contrast. These could become the stars of your next photo.

Jensen, R., Dahl, A., Vogiatzis, G., Tola, E., Aanæs, H.: Large scale multi-view stereopsis evaluation. In: CVPR, pp. 406–413 (2014) me provides over 1,000 free seamless PBR textures, together with diffuse, normal, displacement, occlusion, and roughness maps. Whilst only a handful of free textures (currently 55) are provided by Poliigon, they are certainly worth including in our round-up. Their textures are high quality, are easy to find, and the thumbnails and preview images make it easy (and enjoyable!) to scroll through the various options.

The other texture types are called procedural, which means the textures are generated according to algorithms built into Blender itself. These can be useful for simulating various effects when you don’t have an image of the real material handy; they can also be applied to augment the appearance in various ways. For example:

Halo rendering means an object no longer looks like solid matter, instead it appears to be made of bits of light. The problems of design extend beyond the organizing of space and mass complexes to include the relating of the total form to its natural and architectural environment.
